You like potato and I like potahto,
You like tomato and I like tomahto,
Potato, potahto, tomato, tomahto!
Oh Gershwin brothers, you are both so wise. Somehow they were able to fortell the coming of a restaurant in Stamford. Somewhere around May March 2013 we’ll have TOMĀTO TOMÄTO Pizzeria and Pour House on 401 Shippan Ave, right by Cafe Silvium and Cummings Park.
So, what can you expect here? Well, starting off you can expect a great spot to take the family for pizza and salad without breaking the bank. Also, it’ll be a good place to swing by for a lunch or dinner, have some wine or beer, relax, enjoy, and even go on a date. The menu will feature their thin crust pizza, traditional Italian apps, salads, and pastas with a twist of Modern American. They're executive chef has been working on and perfecting the sauce for the pies for quite a while now and everybody’s very impressed with the results. Also, for those long days, celebrations, and just ol’ fashioned drinking they’ll have a fully stocked bar with a nice and affordable wine selection, too. There will be over 50 different bottles that will be $6-11 per glass or $20-$55 per bottle. And, you can also look forward to having some great beer with pizza…really one of the finer things in life.
When we asked Peter Valis about why he and his partners picked this area, he shared, “We chose the Shippan area for a few reasons. ONE: we love the location and love that we’re on the outskirts of downtown. We wanted a space that had plenty of parking so that a family could easily park and come in and not have to circle around blocks or pay for parking. TWO: we were looking for a space that was near a residential area. Something convenient for the locals. THIRD: we loved the space and the layout of the location. LASTLY: "We love Shippan."
Yes, you might be saying that it’s another pizza place, and another pizza place in Stamford…but when you look at the pizza places down by the water (we actually Google Map’d it), there aren’t as many there.
So, good luck to TOMĀTO TOMÄTO. And, may the slice be with you…
Address: 401 Shippan Ave.

It doesn’t matter how you say it – Tomato Tomato (Tomeyto Tomahto) the new restaurant in the Shippan section of Stamford is a big hit!
“Our goal has been to open a causal and upbeat restaurant in Stamford for years,” stated Peter Valis one of the four owners of the restaurant (along with Frank Vavoulidis, Mike Tsiahouridis and John Calicchio) “We wanted to give people a fun place to go that is based on amazing food and top quality drinks.”
Tomato Tomato offers an Italian American menu that can cater to any palate. The owners designed a flavorful and cost friendly menu that provides starters, salads, signature pizzas, entrees, soups and sides, along with kids choices. The Signature Pizzas come in one size and can be ordered one of two ways, Traditional (with shredded mozzarella) or Old World Style (with fresh mozzarella).
A nice touch and something we love is that the pizzas are very cleverly named after streets in Shippan. So, you can choose from the pizzas like the Ralsey, which is topped with grilled chicken, sautéed spinach and roasted garlic, or the Soundview which is made up of spicy sausage and cherry peppers. The prices of the pizzas range from $8.95 to $16.95 and the entrees range from $12.95 to $18.95.
Tomato Tomato is 4000 square feet and has a 130 seat capacity. There are cherry wood tables draped with Kraft brown paper, thick stock cardboard menus, and subtle lights that create the cozy mood of the restaurant. The 25 foot white marble bar is centrally located with 12 comfortable bar stools stationed around it with two 60 inch flat screen televisions above.
The Marble Bar is fully stocked with bottled beer, crisp wine, specialty drinks, and a list of “Signature ‘Tinis”. The “Signature ‘Tinis” include the likes of the “Grapefruitini” and “Fruitini Throwback” and of course their staple “Filthy Martini”. The “Signature ‘Tinis” range in price from $9.95- $12.95.
“Tomato Tomato is a perfect place to go on a date, watch a sporting event with friends or catch up with the family over a delicious Signature Pizza,” states Vali

Eatery Tomato Tomäto Celebrates Grand Opening. Stamford's newest eatery, Tomato Tomäto, (pronounced Tomato Tomahto) had its grand opening on Saturday, June 1 under a cloudless, sunny sky amid enthusiastic well wishers. Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia was on hand for the ribbon cutting. Mayor Pavia emphasized that although he has been present for many prominent grand openings, the ones he enjoys the most are the ones such as this. "It's great to see the entrepreneurial spirit with small businesses such as this one opening in Stamford," he said. The restaurant, which had its "soft" opening on April 2, specializes in traditional and old world style pizza, appetizers, salads and entrees, all aimed to please many palates. Pizzas range from classic cheese to the Rockledge, which has the more ornate toppings of sweet sausage, goat cheese and fresh basil. The menu also offers soups and sides, and children have items to pick from the kids menu. Diners can enjoy their fare at booths or tables in the restaurant's large space, and there is a long, full bar with flat screen televisions for sports lovers. Tomato Tomäto offers take-out service, and will soon be offering delivery as well. The restaurant's owner, Peter Valis, along with partners John, Frank and Mike have a combined total of many years experience in the restaurant business. "We were partners in multiple franchises in NY, local bars in Stamford and have been event coordinating since 1999," he said. Valis is optimistic about Tomato Tomato's success. "Hopefully, we'll be able to grow and expand to other locations as well." He added that he was "really pleased" with the opening day turnout. Customers also got to enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or bottle of beer as an opening day extra with their meals. Tomato Tomäto is located at 401 Shippan Avenue, Stamford. TOMĀTO TOMÄTO opened in Stamford in early April. We stopped by a week after their grand opening, and the place was packed with folks enjoying pizza pies and beer.
On the menu are several starters like calamari, burrata, and meatballs, salads, and entrees. The most important items on the menu are their signature pizzas and brew. A great combo when watching the game on the big screen televisions by the bar.
They cook their pies two ways: Traditional (with a layer of melted mozzarella cheese - what you'd get at a regular pizzeria) or Old World Style (with slices of mozzarella). A fan of the Old World, we tried two pies cooked in this style. The first was the Fair View made with grilled shrimp, pancetta, arugula, topped with shaved Parmesan and a balsamic reduction. Not a bad mix. The shrimp was an interesting addition to the pie, though it needed some seasoning. The crust - chewy, with a bit of crunch, and the perfect thickness.
The other pie we tried was the Stamford, made with grilled chicken, roasted tomato and goat cheese atop a layer of mozzarella cheese. We'll admit we were thrown off a bit with the combination of the two cheeses, but overall, the pie was good.
Next time we stop by, we plan on trying the pie dubbed the Rockledge made with sweet sausage, goat cheese, and fresh basil.
We are currently accepting reservations for parties of 6 or more only
